MUCO History
The establishment of Makueni University College (MUCO) is traced to the origins of South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Wote Town Campus, which served as the precursor to the current Constituent College. The Campus commenced operations in March 2012 as one of the four satellite campuses of SEKU, located in Wote Town, Makueni County, approximately 170 kilometres from SEKU’s Main Campus in Kitui.
During its operation, Wote Town Campus functioned within SEKU’s Vision, Mission, Mandate, Strategic Objectives, Core Values, and Philosophy, and was guided by the University Charter, Strategic Plan, and other policy instruments and regulations. It steadily expanded its academic offerings, providing diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes in social sciences, arts, and science-based disciplines through regular, part-time/weekend, and online modes of study, thereby enhancing access and equity to university education in Makueni County and the surrounding region.
By the time of its elevation, the Campus had attained a student population of approximately 750 and had demonstrated academic maturity through the training of three (3) PhD graduates, who graduated during the 11th SEKU Graduation Ceremony in 2024. The Campus also strengthened its mandate through collaborations and partnerships with the Makueni County Government, health institutions, schools, the business community, and national partners, while promoting co-curricular activities, innovation through an incubation centre, and technical skills development through TVET programmes at Wote and Mtito Andei.
Following sustained academic growth, infrastructural development, community integration, and institutional maturity, Wote Town Campus met the criteria for elevation into a Constituent College. Consequently, Makueni University College (MUCO) was gazetted in November 2025 as a Constituent College of South Eastern Kenya University, after a rigorous accreditation process by the Commission for University Education (CUE), marking a significant milestone in the expansion of public university education in Makueni County.
